Owner, Reliance Senior Home Services – Founder, All Things Home Care
Caregiving is a critical but often thankless job. This has been especially true during the pandemic, as millions of caregivers have risked their lives every day.
One frequently overlooked but necessary aspect of caregiving is transportation. Not all caregivers have access to reliable transportation, which has led them to turn down jobs, leaving vulnerable populations at risk.
Dana Arnone is on a mission to change that. A registered nurse with more than 30 years of experience and the owner of Reliance Senior Home Services, Arnone recently launched a nonprofit organization called All Things Home Care to raise awareness about the growing issue of transportation in the caregiving community and to secure funding to transport caregivers to and from patients’ houses.
Since home care agencies already operate on slim margins, they’re rarely able to fund transportation for their caregivers, which can lead to areas of Long Island becoming caregiving deserts of sorts. People who live in areas that are not centrally located are more likely to receive inconsistent care, and that puts everybody in a tough spot.
“If you’re giving them an aide here, an aide there, and no one’s with them consistently, that leads to more possible exposure to COVID for the patient,” Arnone said. “There’s more inconsistency of care. And then they end up in the hospital.”
She recalled a call she received from someone trying to find a caregiver who could get to Sands Point.
“He said we were the sixth agency he was calling because no agency can guarantee an aide in that area,” Arnone recalls. “We couldn’t do it either unfortunately.”
After countless encounters like that one, Arnone decided to establish the nonprofit. While it’s still in an early phase and Arnone is currently self-funding the initiative, she hopes that as people learn about the dire need for reliable transportation in the caregiving community, that they will step up to help make a difference.
